Origin and family

Clemens August Maria Droste zu Vischering, the son of the married couple Adolf Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering and Antoinette Maria Johanna von Ascheberg zu Botzlar, came from the noble Droste zu Vischering family , one of the oldest and most important families in the bishopric of Münster . Among the six sons were Adolf Heidenreich (Droste and builder of the Erbdrostenhof), Kaspar Maximilian (Bishop of Münster), Franz Otto (Catholic theologian and publicist), Clemens August (Archbishop of Cologne) and Maximilian Heidenreich (District Administrator in Brilon).

Professional background

Clemens August continued the family tradition that had lasted for more than 250 years and was appointed Drosten von Ahaus und Horstmar on February 8, 1765 after his father had renounced the office of Drosten. On the same day he was also appointed aristocratic district administrator. Even before the general establishment of the districts in Prussia in 1816, the Prussian King Frederick the Great had set up districts in the province of Westphalia at the beginning / middle of the 18th century , and he regularly entrusted people from the nobility with the management. Clemens August remained in the Drostenamt until his death and was reinforced on July 23, 1777 by his eldest son Adolf Heidenreich, who took over the official duties on the day of his death. He was hereditary droplets and privy councilor
