Franz Otto Droste zu Vischering (born September 13, 1771 at Vorhelm Castle near Ahlen ; † February 26, 1826 in Münster ) was a German Catholic theologian and publicist.

Life

Origin and family

Franz Otto was born to the couple Clemens August Maria Droste zu Vischering (Erbdroste, 1742–1790) and Sophia Alexandrina Droste zu Füchten (1748–1817) of the noble family Droste zu Vischering , one of the oldest and most important Westphalian families. He grew up with his five siblings. His older brother Adolf Heidenreich was Erbdroste and builder of the Erbdrostenhof , Kaspar Maximilian was Bishop of the Münster, Clemens August Archbishop of Cologne and Maximilian Heidenreich District Administrator in Brilon.

Career

He received his training from private tutors before studying philosophy and theology at the University of Münster . In 1789 he became canon in Münster. Between 1795 and 1797 he and his brother Clemens August traveled through Germany , Switzerland and Italy . In 1798 he was made a subdeacon in Rome and a short time later he was ordained a deacon . He received another canon post in 1800 in Hildesheim . He was also appointed to the Privy Council that same year.

From 1811 he lived as a pensioner and devoted himself to his theological studies. He was a close theological advisor to his brothers and was in contact with the leading Catholic authors of his time.

His writings on the relationship between state and church were important. After 1814 he criticized the state church that was predominant at that time. He contrasted this with a concept based on old ideas. According to this, church and state are two separate areas that stand side by side on an equal footing. No one is entitled to give instructions to the other side. However, they would have to work together in mixed areas such as marriage, school and the poor.

The coordination theory developed by Vischering was spread by Joseph Görres in Catholic Germany since 1819. Until the end of the 19th century, it had a strong influence on the conception of church and state, and not just among Catholics.
