The Clusius yarrow ( Achillea clusiana ) is a species of yarrow ( Achillea ) within the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The name honors the Dutch botanist Charles de l'Écluse (called "Carolus Clusius" in Latin).

The Clusius yarrow used to be a subspecies of the black-rimmed yarrow ( Achillea atrata ).

description

The strongly fragrant, perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters and has a simple, upright stem that is only branched in the cup area. Stems and wicker stems are loosely hairy.

The basal leaves are short stalked, the stem leaves sitting. The leaves are double to triple pinnate, with the almost bristle tips between 0.3 and 0.5 millimeters wide.

The baskets, which are between 9 and 12 millimeters wide, are 5 to 15 in a cluster. The cover is between 3.5 and 5 millimeters long and 3.5 and 5 millimeters wide. The elongated bracts are indistinctly arranged in roof tiles. The ray florets are 2.5 to 4 millimeters long. The fruit is a 2 millimeter long achenes without pappus .

The flowering period is July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The Clusius yarrow is endemic to the north-eastern Limestone Alps in Austria and is only widespread in the federal states of Upper, Lower Austria and northern Styria, where it is often found in the subalpine to alpine altitude range . The distribution area includes the Dead Mountains to the Schneeberg , the species also occurs on the Balkan Peninsula with Albania, Serbia, Greece, Macedonia and Bulgaria.

Freshly seeped rock debris, snow valleys and stone lawns are preferred as locations . The Clusius yarrow is a species of character of the order Thlaspietalia rotundifolii.
