The Clusius snowdrop is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 7 to 15 (5 to 18) centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as a persistence organ. The leaves measure at flowering time (3.6) 4.5 to 20 (25) × 0.6 to 1.6 centimeters. The top is green to bluish green in color, the underside whitish blue. Vertical stripes may be present or absent on the top. The leaves are folded back at the edge at a sharp angle of 90 to 180 ° to the underside. The flowers are fragrant.

The inner bracts of Galanthus plicatus subsp. plicatus have only a green spot at the end on the upper side (inside), in Galanthus plicatus subsp. byzantine is a spot at the bottom and at the end.

The flowering period extends from February to April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Galanthus plicatus subsp. plicatus occurs in the Crimea , in north-west Turkey and in south-east Romania , the Ukraine in deciduous deciduous and coniferous forests on calcareous and poor soils at altitudes of (80) 1000 to 1350 meters.

Galanthus plicatus subsp. byzantinus is found in beech and oak forests in northwestern Turkey on rich soils at altitudes of 100 to 300 meters. This subspecies often grows on streams and has become overgrown locally in Germany, either by escaping from culture or by anointing .

The Clusius snowdrop is used as an ornamental plant for borders, rock gardens, under trees and in loose lawns. There are numerous varieties (selection):

  • 'Warham': The leaves are wide with a wide blue stripe on top. The flowers are very large, the inner bracts have a spot.
  • 'Cordelia': The flowers are double.
  • 'Trym': the outer bracts resemble the inner ones.
  • 'Wendy's Gold': The bracts are yellow.
