Coldsteel is an American power and thrash metal band from Long Island , New York , which was founded in 1986, disbanded in 1993 and has been active again since 2012.
history
The band was founded in 1986 by drummer Dominic "Dom" Mincieli. In her early days she covered songs by Metallica , Slayer , Anthrax , Megadeth and Overkill , but soon after began to write her own songs. In addition to Mincieli, guitarists Sam Ferrara and Joe Catanese as well as singer and bassist Greg Hock were part of the cast. In the summer of 1987 Greg Hock and Joe Catanese left the band again. The replacement was bassist Adam Rosen, singer Troy Norr and guitarist Ave Casas. In this formation the group recorded their first song called Dead by Dawn . Shortly afterwards Adam Rosen left the band again and Rick Lopez joined him. The band then wrote more songs, including Smashed! and crackdown . In addition, the band began working on their first demo. Before the release, Sam Ferrara was replaced by Joe Shavel. The band recorded their first demo called Dead by Dawn in 1988 at Monkey Hill Studios in College Point , New York . The sound carrier was then sent to various labels. A little later, the band received a response from Metal Blade Records , but they requested two more songs. The group then recorded the required two songs with Scarred for Life and Madness Overthrown . However, this also meant that the band couldn't get a contract with the label. As a result, Rick Lopez left the band and was replaced by Greg Hock, who returned to the band. In the summer of 1989 the band released a professionally created and packaged version of Dead by Dawn , with the demo spanning four songs. A few days later, after the band had received the first shipment of sound carriers, founding member Dom Mincieli died on June 30, 1989 in a car accident through no fault of their own.
In the same year Rob Napalitano joined the band as the new drummer. New material was then written and the next demo, Perfect Peace, was recorded at the Speed of Sound Studios in Franklin Square , New York. It developed into a hit and achieved an unusually high circulation for demos. Rob Napalitano left the band in 1991 due to musical differences and after two bad castings, an adequate replacement was found in Fred Matzelle. Then the band got a contract with the German label Turbo Music . In 1992 the debut album Freakboy was released , which was recorded at Minot Sound Studios in White Plains , New York. Shortly thereafter, Fred Matzelle was replaced by Hal Aponte. Coldsteel earned himself live routine in performances with, among others, Morbid Angel , Annihilator and Reverend . For 1992, the band planned a small European tour , which had to be canceled because Turbo Music ceased operations. The album was then distributed in the USA through JL America and its sub-labels in Europe. In 1993 the band broke up.
The album was re-released through Pavement Recordings in 1992 and on Battle Cry Records in 2012 . In 2012 the band got back together and released the EP America Idle .
style
Stefan Glas from Metal Hammer assigned Freakboy to Power Metal, with the drums whipping and the vocals being harmonious and fiery, but still catchy. Mike Biller from Metal Star described the style as "slightly radioed Thrash Metal", only the non-demo pieces had gripping melodies. The "dull production" and the immature demo compositions made the comparison with anthrax a farce. thethrashmetalguide.com described the band as a bit more melodic than Exodus , with the riffs being as angry and heavy as Pantera and Exhorder . There are also offbeat moments like on Death Angels Act III . Holger Stratmann from Rock Hard heard Freakboy influences from Mucky Pup , Scatterbrain , Hades and Anthrax.
