Colin S. Gray

Colin Spencer Gray (born December 29, 1943 in Oxfordshire - † February 27, 2020 ) was a British - American political scientist and theorist of geopolitics . A dual citizen, he has served as a military advisor to both the US and UK governments. He taught as Professor of International Relations and Strategic Studies at Reading University . He was also a senior associate at the US think tank he founded National Institute for Public Policy and external researcher for the United States Army War College .

Life

Gray studied at Manchester University and Oxford University , where he received his doctorate in 1970 . Before taking up the professorship in Reading, he taught at Lancaster University in the UK , York University in Toronto in Canada and at the University of British Columbia . He has held senior positions for the Canadian Institute of International Affairs in Toronto, the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London and the Hudson Institute . In 1981 he founded the National Institute for Public Policy . From 1982 to 1987, Gray was a member of the General Advisory Committee on Arms Control and Disarmament under President Ronald Reagan .

Gray attracted international attention in 1980 with the thesis that a nuclear war can be fought and won. As the price for such a decisive war for a new world order, he named 20 million dead Americans, but ten times as many would experience the ideal post-atomic world, which is shaped by Western values.
