List of grape varieties

Colobel is a red wine variety newly bred by the French breeder Albert Seibel at the beginning of the 20th century . It is a cross between Seibel 6150 and Seibel 5455 and belongs to the large family of Seibel vines . It is an extremely complex breed in which genes from the wild grapes Vitis rupestris , Vitis aestivalis , Vitis cinerea , Vitis berlandieri and Vitis vinifera are present. In 1960 the area under vines in France was 1,269 hectares . In 1988 the area had shrunk to 105 hectares. Smaller vineyards are also known in the United States (→ viticulture in New York ).

Colobel sprouts late, with good fungus resistance to powdery mildew . On the other hand, it is susceptible to anthracnose . The berries are ripe about 2 weeks after those of the Gutedel . Depending on the expansion, a deep red simple wine is created . The wine is mostly used in a blend with other grape varieties, as its color coverage is five times higher than that of Cabernet Sauvignon . The grape variety is therefore often used as a dye grape in cooler wine-growing regions .

Although it is a hybrid grape , cultivation was no longer recommended in the EU in the 1950s , but was still allowed to be used in the French Languedoc and Loire Valley . According to a decree of April 18, 2008, the grape variety is one of the officially approved grape varieties for commercial cultivation, since the genome of the plant contains parts of the noble grape Vitis vinifera .
