Colomba Antonietti (born October 19, 1826 in Bastia Umbra , † June 13, 1849 in Rome ) was an Italian patriot who fell during the First Italian War of Independence . Today streets and schools bear her name.

Life

The parents - the baker Michele Antonietti and his wife Diana Trabalza - moved to Foligno with their children . It was there that 15-year-old Colomba met Count Luigi Porzi, a cadet in the papal troop. The socially unequal couple married on December 13, 1846 against the wishes of their relatives in Foligno. The count went with his wife to Bologna , where his mother lived, and later to Rome. The husband's battalion was stationed there. Porzi was promoted to lieutenant, but had to spend a while in the Castel Sant'Angelo on half pay because he had married illegally.

After she had cut her hair the male fashion, Colomba joined the Garibaldi Freischar in spring 1849 , where she served as a shooter . During the defense of the Roman Republic , she fought against the Spanish Bourbons in Velletri and Palestrina in mid-May 1849 . Then she took part in the defense of Rome against that of Pope Pius IX. French expeditionary force called for help under General Oudinot . On June 13th, Colomba was fatally wounded during a French cannonade at Porta San Pancrazio. Dying in her husband's arms, Colomba is said to have whispered: “Viva l'Italia” (Long live Italy).
