The Comandante Cigala Fulgosi is a patrol boat ( Offshore Patrol Vessels - OPV ) of the Italian Marina Militare and the lead ship of the Cigala Fulgosi class .
history
The ship was named after the Italian officer Giuseppe Cigala Fulgosi . After being launched on October 7, 2000, test drives were carried out on April 27, 2001 and on July 31, 2001 it was handed over to the Italian Navy. The ship's motto is “Virtutis fortuna comes” ( Virtue flourishes ), which was previously assigned to the destroyer San Martino of the Regia Marina. In February 2003 the Comandante Cigala Fulgosi completed a practice cruise in the Arabian Sea together with the minehunters of the Lerici class Chioggia and Viareggio . On May 29, 2003 they were recalled and from June 5 they supported the amphibious assault ship San Giusto in securing the sea route in the Persian Gulf .
On June 29, 2003, the Comandante Cigala Fulgosi left the mission and reached her home port on July 19. From November 1 to December 31, 2006, she supported the task force Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 of NATO in the Mediterranean . From September 1, 2008 to December 5, 2008 she was part of the European Maritime Force in the UN peacekeeping mission IMPARTIAL BEHAVIOR off the coast of Lebanon . The crew was honored with the UN medal for their participation in the UNIFIL mission on November 27, 2008 under Captain Maximilian of Fregata Grazioso .
From June 7th to 12th, 2009, the Comandante Cigala Fulgosi took part in the naval exercise "Adrion Livex 09", in which all residents of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas participated. The ship was parked for the second time from November 5 to December 1, 2009 for the UN peacekeeping mission IMPARTIAL BEHAVIOR.
In May 2019 the Comandante Cigala Fulgosi cruised off the Libyan coast in action for the "Operazione Mare Sicuro" . Here, the backup who was drilling platforms the company Eni against Libya and the ship Capri , which in the port of Tripoli supported the "Operazione Mare Sicuro" logistically, in the foreground. 43 nautical miles (around 80 km) off the coast, a refugee boat was discovered on May 9, 2019 and was about to sink. The Comandante Cigala Fulgosi turned and took the 36 people, including eight children and two women, on board.
When the Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini heard of the rescue of the refugees, he criticized the behavior of the Italian captain. In Salvini's opinion, the latter should have waited until the Libyan coast guard took in the refugees and brought them back to Libya. The master pointed out that his actions complied with international and Italian law. In order to avoid a scenario similar to that in August 2018, in which Salvini initially prohibited the Italian coast guard ship U. Diciotti from landing in an Italian port with refugees on board, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte clarified that the refugees would be accepted by other EU countries. Now he allowed the ship Stromboli , which had since taken in the refugees, to bring the people ashore in Augusta .
