Comes love

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Comes Love is a jazz standard written by Lew Brown, Charles Tobias and Sam H. Stept and recorded in 1938 by the American clarinetist Artie Shaw with his big band and singer Helen Forrest .

The title was covered by Benny Goodman as early as 1939 ; further new recordings followed, among others by Billie Holiday and Sylvia Syms .

In July 1957, jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald recorded the song with a star cast along with Louis Armstrong ( trumpet and vocals ), Oscar Peterson ( piano ), Louie Bellson ( drums ) and Ray Brown ( double bass ).

Comes Love is still a popular standard today , as shown by cover versions of pop and jazz singers such as Joni Mitchell , Norah Jones , Peter Cincotti , Stacey Kent and Diana Krall .

Melody and harmony

  • A part

Comes Love Sheet Music Example1.jpg The melody is based on a simple harmony : It begins with the tonic (here as in the example image in D minor) and is then led to the dominant (A major or, depending on the version, A7, A7b9 etc.). The second part of the theme melody begins with the dominant and is returned to the tonic. The sheet music example is based on Artie Shaw's version; both melody and rhythm can vary widely.

  • B part

In the B part ("Don't try hidin ... '") the tonic minor chord (Dm ) becomes a tonic seventh chord (D7) to lead to the subdominant. This harmony in both A and B is typical and can be found in classical, jazz, tango and folk songs alike.

text

In the text, various circumstances that could affect the lyrical self or the person addressed are addressed ( comes a rainstorm ) and put into perspective by a "simple solution" ( put your rubbers on your feet ):

" Comes a rainstorm, put your rubbers on your feet; Comes a snowstorm, you can get a little heat. Comes love, nothing can be done (...) "

In the B part, the hopelessness of the situation is described:

" Don't try hiding, it isn't any use. You start sliding while your heart turns on the juice "
