Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight (English: twilight means twilight ) is the official fourth part of the Command & Conquer: -Tiberium series. The Tiberium saga about Kane should be finally ended with this part.

action

The storyline takes place in 2062, 15 years after Tiberium Wars . The earth is on the verge of uninhabitable due to the massive growth of Tiberium and Kane is forced to work with the GDI to stop the destruction of the planet. There are, however, fanatical opponents of this alliance on both sides. According to official announcements by Electronic Arts, this part of the game will reveal Kane's long-kept secret.

Under cover of the night

Under cover of the night is a specially created bonus mission that you bought when you pre-ordered the game. In this mission you play neither for the Brotherhood of Nod nor for the GDI, but for the Nod separatist Gideon, who sees Kane as a false prophet and plans an ambush on him. The mission is the actual backstory that you would otherwise find out in the first mission of the single player mode. While this mission is the first one the player plays, it was the last one designed and created. On April 8, 2011, the prequel mission was released for all players.

The mission begins on May 1, 2077 on the outskirts of New Adana, about 12 hours before the game's actual campaign begins. After the start of the mission, the outskirts of a city of the GDI must be visited, where three trucks are parked with which one is supposed to get into the city undetected through a tunnel system. On behalf of Gideon, the trucks loaded with Obelisks of Light have to be smuggled through the tunnel system into the city in order to prevent Kane from presenting the Tiberium control network to the world. Since the GDI is not allowed to notice anything of Gideon's plan, a number of GDI patrols have to be switched off and, at the end, the communication of a GDI base has to be interrupted, since otherwise they would report the theft of the trucks by Nod troops.

Gameplay

As before, there should be cutscenes with actors, but they should be more action-oriented and convey the story better. Due to the fact that only those players who have reached a certain game speed and have followed a certain basic structure can survive in online multiplayer mode , it was decided not to do so in the fourth part - unlike in all other parts of the Tiberium universe to set the base building, but almost all functions via a mobile unit (the so-called " crawler ", English for crawlers ) to make controllable. What is new, among other things, is that you no longer win a game by destroying your opponent, but by conquering structures (buildings or the like), which also means that despite the loss of all units, e.g. B. a mission does not have to be reloaded or has to be played again from the beginning. Another new feature is that the type of game (offensive, defensive or support) can be selected before the start of each match in order to provide each player with the right units for their preferred type of game. If you choose to play in offensive mode, you can build the strongest tanks; If you opt for the defensive mode, you can build defensive structures and the ion cannon, while the support mode is based more on supporting factions of the game such as aircraft and artillery.

As with Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars , there will only be fixed mining areas for Tiberium, whereby unlike in Tiberium Wars there will be no Tiberium fields, but with the mobile gameplay design of the "Crawler" the previous mining method with refinery and collector will not more will be possible. Since Tiberium has become a controlled resource, there are no longer any Tiberium fields as such. The Tiberium supply is provided by a huge distribution network, which manifests itself primarily through pipes running in the landscape and new (tech) buildings. The decision was made to use this new form of Tiberium mining because the developers were of the opinion that the old method neither suited the new (more mobile) gameplay nor the story. Since they wanted to give fans the opportunity to collect Tiberium, the decision was made to set up areas on maps where new Tiberium is regularly delivered by air transport. The delivered Tiberium looks like individual Tiberium crystal rods held together with a metal ring, which the player can then transport to his base with a unit (the Tiberium crystal and the unit that transports it can also be destroyed so that the opponent cannot collect it). Although it looks like some collectable Tiberium can be found freely on the map, the method with Tiberium that can be found in certain places is more reminiscent of a kind of capture-the-flag mode than the classic collection of Tiberium.

As in Red Alert 3 , skill points can be unlocked with which you can upgrade your units, depending on your preferred game type (offensive or defensive). Compared to the earlier parts of the series, it turns out that you can gain experience points (XP) not only e.g. B. obtained by destroying units, but also for example for taking buildings, etc. Skill points earned in one mode (multiplayer, campaign, etc.) are also available in all other modes.

Soundtrack

Nick Lavers worked as audio director for the soundtrack for Tiberian Twilight , who describes the soundtrack as darker and more mature than the soundtrack for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 . Jason Graves took care of the background music of the GDI for the soundtrack, which was only played by an orchestra and does not contain vocals or passages produced with electronic instruments. The soundtrack to the GDI storyline is military and heroic in nature. Timothy Michael Wynn was responsible for the background music for the Nod campaign. James Hannigan designed the musical theme of the game as well as the task of bringing the background music in line with the story. All pieces were played by the London Philharmonia Orchestra . The soundtrack was included free of charge when the game was ordered in advance.

James Hannigan, Nick Lavers and Timothy Michael Wynn also worked on the soundtrack for Red Alert 3 and designed parts of it.

copy protection

Players criticize the type of control of Electronic Arts, which is intended to ensure that the owner of the game has legally acquired it: an online connection is required before starting when registering the game and during the entire game. The publisher justifies this with the new type of game principle of the further development of a “persona” of a player. Upgrades earned in single player mode can now also be used in multiplayer mode. According to EA, the permanent connection is only required to prevent cheating in single player mode. Unlike z. B. Assassin's Creed II , Tiberian Twilight can be played even when there is no internet connection. Experience points gained, which are very important for the course of the game (e.g. for the activation of units and upgrades), are not saved if the connection to the server is lost, which means that the connection is broken (be it on the part of the consumer or on the part of the game manufacturer) would make progress in the game completely impossible. According to consumer reports, there were similar utilization problems with the game manufacturer's servers on the first weekend after the release, as was already the case with Assassin's Creed II, where the game temporarily collapsed due to a hacker attack on the game manufacturer's servers. Another disadvantage of the new way of designing the game is that you need an account on Electronic Arts' website to activate the game and the registration code is permanently linked to this account, making it impossible to resell the game. Furthermore, profiles of a player could be created in the future, which could then be used for marketing purposes. The advantage of this type of control (which makes it very likely that the game was purchased legally) is that the game DVD no longer has to remain in the drive to start the game, which protects the media from accidental destruction by the drive or long-term use protects.

Shortly after the announcement of the game on July 9, 2009 by Electronic Arts, it was announced that the game would not have any copy protection, which, however , was partially restricted or relativized a little later with the statement that only no digital rights management (DRM) was used has been. The main difference to programs that only need the internet connection to activate the game, for example, is that the internet connection has to be maintained at all times, even if no large amounts of data are being transferred.

reception

According to the vast majority of customer reviews, the concept and the change in the classic style is also heavily criticized by the fan community. In particular, the fact that bases can neither be built nor resources dismantled, as one was used to from previous versions, is criticized by the fan base. The big difference to all previous editions (with the exception of Renegade) is the prevention of the construction of large armies, which, according to many fans, made the character of the game.

“The problem [with the new mobile gameplay]: Tactically, unfortunately, you often have no choice but to roll the base as close as possible to the enemy and from there to throw him dead with tanks. It's boring and has nothing to do with strategy. [...]
On the other hand, special superunits of the single player campaign will make you white-hot because they can withstand far too much. Neither of these super units is much fun in combat. Instead, they cost you time, money and nerves. In any case, one has the impression that the single player mode was scripted more badly than quite together because only rarely does one have the feeling of tactical possibilities. In C&C 4, mass wins over class. Our conclusion: an original new approach but unimportant single player mode and unsatisfactory storyline. The fact that we still like C&C 4 a lot is due to the multiplayer mode in which you can have a lot of fun with two races, three classes and ten players. "

“Graphically, little has changed compared to the previous game“ Kane's Revenge ”. The cutscenes show real videos with actors. The units in the game are beautifully designed - from the threatening looking spider armor to gigantic four-legged fighting machines. Only the copy protection is unpleasant. In order to be able to play, you have to log on to the Electronic Arts servers and stay online, otherwise the scores cannot be saved. EA draws level with Ubisoft in that it forces users to have a permanent internet connection even for offline games. How many interested parties will answer this concept by refusing to buy remains to be seen. "

Unlike in all previous games in the Command & Conquer series, fans were given the opportunity to suggest the subtitle for the first time. Tiberian Twilight , which was the original working title of Tiberium Wars , prevailed against other proposals such as Tiberian Dusk , Tiberian Eclipse , Kane's Ascension , Kane's Prophecy, and others as subtitles. Also for the first time there was the opportunity for fans to suggest the names for two units.

On February 19, 2010, lead designer Sam Bass confirmed in an interview that C&C 4 would not allow gaming in the LAN or support for dedicated servers . As with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , this fact was only announced after the pre-sale began.

C&C 4 was initially planned as an online version of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for the Asian market and was finally launched worldwide as a full-price title, expanded by a campaign.
