Concepción is a small town in the Santa Cruz department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Concepción is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Concepción and capital of the province Ñuflo de Chávez and is located at an altitude of 500  m about 250 kilometers northeast of the capital of the department, Santa Cruz de la Sierra .

Concepción is located on the Laguna Zapocó (also: Represa Zapocó ), a lake about four kilometers long in the west of the city.

history

Concepción was founded by Jesuits in 1699 and served as a missionary village for the catholization of the Chiquito Indians. In 1722 the village was moved to its current location and in 1745 had about 2,000 inhabitants from tribes of the Punasicas, Boococas, Tubasicas, Paicones, Puyzocas, Quimonecas, Quitemos, Napecas, Paunacas and Tapacuracas .

The Cathedral of Concepción was built between 1753 and 1756 and is still the center of the emerging town today. In 1766, Concepción lived in 713 families with 3276 people. When in 1767 the Jesuit order by the Spanish King Charles III. was banned and the village was handed over to secular hands, many residents fled to the woods. In the following century and a half, the population continued to decrease, due to epidemics and famine, and towards the end of the 19th century due to the displacement of the indigenous population into the rubber tree plantations.

climate

The region's climate is a semi-humid climate of the warm tropics . The monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly over the course of the year between 21 ° C in June / July and 26.6 ° C in October, although they are almost constant between 25 and 26 ° C between September and March. The annual mean temperature is 24.3 ° C.

The long-term average annual rainfall is 1168 mm. Three quarters of the precipitation fall in the wet season from September to March, while in the arid months of June, July and August fall less than 40 mm per month in the dry season .

Transport network

Concepción is 288 kilometers by road northeast of Santa Cruz , the capital of the department.

From Santa Cruz, the Ruta 4 highway leads north through the cities of Warnes and Montero 58 kilometers to Guabirá , where it meets Ruta 10 , which crosses the Río Grande to the northeast . After a further 71 kilometers, the Ruta 10 joins the Ruta 9 in Los Troncos , and together the two roads lead 56 kilometers north to the city of San Ramón . Here the two roads separate again, and there are another 103 more kilometers via San Javier until the Ruta 10 reaches Concepción and from here continues to San Matías on the Brazilian border.
