The Concours international de jeunes chefs d'orchestre de Besançon , English International Besançon Competition for Young Conductors , is a music competition for young conductors in Besançon , France .

history

In 1951, the composer, music and film critic Émile Vuillermoz organized the competition as part of the Festival international de musique de Besançon Franche-Comté, founded in 1948 . In the years 1954 to 1973 prizes were awarded in two categories: for “Professionnels, diplômés” and “Non professionnels, non diplômés”. The competition took place annually until 1993, and every two years from 1993.

For many award winners, it was the springboard to a great international career that followed, including Seiji Ozawa , Ali Rahbari , Jesús López-Cobos and Sylvain Cambreling .

The first prize is endowed with prize money and the prospect of engagement with a famous orchestra such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Prague Symphony Orchestra , the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain , the Dresden Philharmonic or the Opera North .
