Copăceni (formerly Copand ; Hungarian Koppánd ) is a village in Cluj County ( Romania ). It is part of the Sănduleşti municipality .

Copăceni is located in western Transylvania on the northeastern edge of the Apuseni Mountains , about 12 kilometers from the community center. The closest larger city is Turda (Thorenburg) (approx. 5 km southeast). The place is located directly on the common European roads 60 and 81 . The nearest train station is about 10 km east of the village on the Cluj-Napoca-Războieni railway line .

history

Copăceni was first mentioned in 1176. In 1658 the place, which had been inhabited mainly by Hungarians, was completely destroyed by Turks and Tatars and then repopulated with Romanians . According to A. Koch and M. Roska , archaeological finds indicate that the place was settled as early as the Neolithic Age . In addition to archaeological objects, an aqueduct and a Roman road that led from Potaissa to Napoca were found on the area of ​​the village . Also here there is also a grave mound , on the site of the locals Dăbăgău known which of Prehistory is assigned.

population

In 1850, 381 people lived in Copăceni. 347 of them were Romanians, 16 Magyars and 17 were Roma . The highest population of the village (1363) and also that of the Romanians (1349) was determined in 1977. The highest population of the Magyars (91) and that of the Romanian Germans (3) were registered in 1900. In 2002, 1209 of the 1250 inhabitants of the village described themselves as Romanians, 25 as Hungarians and 16 as Roma.

Attractions

In Copăceni there is a Romanian Orthodox church from 1739. There is also a park with a mansion built in the 19th century for the Vitéz family . This property is a listed building.

To the northwest of Copăceni is the approximately two kilometer Cheile Turului valley gorge , which is formed by the Pârâul Racilor stream .
