history

The place, as the name suggests, probably dates back to the Greek era.

In order to protect the coast from piracy , especially from the barbarian states, in the middle of the 16th century , structural measures were necessary. In 1550 watchtowers were built along the coast, one on the border to Belmonte , namely the now largely disappeared Torre Vierri, one on Cape Coreca , and finally another in Campora San Giovanni . The corporal ('caporale') Ignazio Magnicaro took possession of the tower at Coreca in 1681.

Coreca in 1950

In 2015 the dispute began about a huge barrier that was to be erected in front of the rock of Coreca ( scoglio di Coreca ), which Odysseus is said to have called "Koreca petre". Since the rock was not endangered, a citizens' initiative was formed against the project. In 2017, the area was exposed to industrial waste poisoning the Oliva River, with a court acquitting the defendants.

economy

Due to its proximity to Campora San Giovanni, Coreca's main economic resource is the tourism sector, which develops thanks to the beauty of the coast: the rocks are highly valued in Coreca. They have been photographed since the 1960s and used as locations for amateur radio. A small number of residents work in agriculture. Onions, citrus fruits and potatoes are grown. There is also poultry and pig farming on an industrial scale. The economic situation is characterized by small companies in the construction, textile, food, securities and mechanical sectors. There are a number of commuters to Cosenza , Catanzaro and Lamezia Terme .
