Cornudella de Montsant is a Catalan municipality in the province of Tarragona in northeastern Spain . It is in the Comarca Priorat .

location

Cornudella is located about 30 km northwest of Tarragona in the extreme northeast of the Priorat and has the largest municipal area of the comarca with around 63 km². The municipality is located on the upper reaches of the Siurana river between the Montsant massif , which here reaches a height of up to 1166 meters, and the Prades mountains, which are up to 1093 meters high.

The eastern part of the district is already in the mountains of Prades and is dominated by impressive rocks, on which the ancient fortress village Siurana is enthroned. It was incorporated into Cornudella in 1942.

history

The first mention of the Cornudella settlement dates back to the 12th century. Residents of the village were involved in the conquest of Valencia under Raimund Berengar IV and were rewarded afterwards. Cornudella already had a certain demographic importance. At the beginning of the 15th century, the community received a city wall and the second church.

Attractions

View of the village of Siurana

The suburb of Siurana lies on a mighty limestone cliff at an altitude of 737 meters . It offers a wide view of the valley of the river and reservoir of the same name . The rocky landscape makes Siurana a magnet for climbers.

Cornudella de Montsant is also a good starting point for exploring the Priorat and Montsant wine-growing regions , with the Celler Cooperatiu (1919), built by the Catalan architect Cèsar Martinell .

economy

Viticulture and the cultivation of hazelnuts are essential industries in the city .

Another important agricultural product is olive oil . The small arbequina is the predominant olive variety. This olive oil has the protected designation of origin Siurana .
