action

After the end of a school festival, the seven friends Satoshi Mochida, Ayumi Shinozaki, Mayu Suzumoto, Naomi Nakashima, Sakutaro Morishige, Yoshiki Kishinuma and Seiko Shinohara secretly meet in the evening in the classroom of the Kusaragi High School and tell each other scary stories by candlelight . One of them is about Tenji Elementary School, which was on the site of what is now Kusaragi High School before it was demolished. Some tragic and cruel murders are said to have occurred there. Before Ayumi can tell the story to the end, the troupe is discovered by their teacher Yui Shishido, who brings Satoshi's younger sister Yuka with her. Before the group separates, they want to complete a friendship ritual, in which a paper figure is torn and the scraps of paper kept, as Mayu Suzumoto is supposed to change schools.

After the end of the ritual, there is a sudden power failure and an earthquake, as a result of which the floor breaks up and everyone in the classroom pulls down. They wake up separately from each other in different time axes of a parallel universe in which the Tenji elementary school still exists and try to find a way back into their world. In order to get back into their timeline, the students have to get the murderer's soul to confess his actions. Satoshi and the others decide independently of each other to find a way back into reality and solve the mystery of Tenji Elementary School. It is shown that the teacher Yoshikazu Yanagihori several dead children, the tongue cut out.

Naomi and Seiko wake up in the same room and are looking for a way out of school together. But they quickly find out that both the windows and the school doors are magically locked. When the two take a rest in the school sickroom, Naomi notices that she has lost her piece of paper from the friendship ritual and goes looking for it. Shortly thereafter, Seiko is attacked by a ghost and barely escapes it and soon meets a mysterious girl in red. When Seiko meets Naomi again, she is insulted and Seiko runs away in a rage. After she calmed down a bit, Naomi goes in search of Seiko to apologize to her, but finds her body hanged in a toilet cubicle.

Ayumi and Yoshiki are persecuted by the souls of several children and saved by the spirit of Naho Saenoki. On her advice, the two begin to look for the tongues of the murdered children in order to redeem their souls. Meanwhile Mayu is brutally murdered by the other evil souls and Yui is overwhelmed by the undead Yoshikazu. Satoshi and his younger sister Yuka are separated from each other by a mysterious girl in red. Yuka is chased by Sakutaro, who has since lost his mind after seeing Mayu's mutilated corpse. She is saved by Yuya Kizami, a student at Byakudan Senior High School. This also turns out to be crazy and now also starts to chase Yuka through the entire school before he is struck down by Yoshikazu.

In the meantime, three of the four souls of the children have been redeemed. As a result, space-time was destabilized so that Ayumi and Yoshiki can return to their timeline thanks to the help of Yuki, the redeemed spirit of one of the children. Shortly afterwards, the spell is strengthened again, which means that no one is able to leave Tenji elementary school. Yuki shows Ayumi a vision of a murder and reveals that the real killer is the mysterious girl in red, Sachiko Shinozaki. After an argument with Yoshiki, Ayumi decides to go back to the other dimension to save her friends who are still alive. In the meantime, Naho was able to bring Satoshi and Naomi together. Yuka has since been captured, tortured and partially skinned by Yuya . Yoshiki, who has also decided to return to the other dimension, kills Yuya before sacrificing himself to protect Yuka and Ayumi from Yoshikazu. Satoshi and Naomi find Ayumi and Yuka, who dies of serious injuries in her brother's arms.

Ayumi explains to Naomi and Satoshi that they have to appease Sachiko's soul and that they have to complete the friendship ritual with their scraps of paper one more time in order to be able to enter their own dimension. Shortly afterwards, Ayumi confronts Naho, who has deliberately lied on her blog about the correct execution of the ritual, and defeats it. Later she has to watch her teacher Yui being beheaded by falling rubble . During an investigation into the basement, Naomi finds a video in which she sees her best friend Seiko hanged when she was possessed by one of the souls . She collapses before Seiko's soul alleviates her emotional pain. After the three Sachikos have redeemed the soul, the dimension begins to collapse. Satoshi gives his piece of paper to Naomi, who has lost her piece of paper and instead tries to use his sister's piece of paper for the ritual, not knowing that he is using Yuya's pieces of paper. Naomi and Ayumi return to their dimension. However, since Satoshi used a piece of paper from a boy from another school for the friendship ritual, only his severed arms returned. In a scene after the credits you see the catatonic Naomi in her room and her mother who doubts the existence of Seiko and the other deceased classmates.

reception

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls gained fame as one of the cruelest anime series in history.

German-language reviews

According to Oliver Armknecht, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is one of the better horror anime because it scores with the atmosphere of the story told. Armknecht wrote in his review that Asread. was not previously known for animated masterpieces, but the animation studio managed to create constant tension with Corpse Party: Tortured Souls . However, the critic is amazed at the FSK classification of 16 years due to the brutal scenes shown in the OVA.

Nyavi wrote on the website Anime-Nachrichten.de that Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is not for the faint of heart, as there is slaughter and massacre without great censorship, which evokes memories of the anime Another . However, the shortness of the series was criticized, which, according to critics, could have been expanded. So there is no background story, you are "thrown directly into the action with the students, they die every minute and without a fight for survival" and the secret of the Tenji elementary school is already revealed after episode three. Despite the rash effect, the critic recommends the anime for a short horror trip.

Burak Dogan was extremely disappointed with the German dubbed version, as the atmosphere in the German version was completely lost by the cast. Asread's animation, however, is described by Dogan as solid. The music used in the series was largely optimally selected and staged quite appropriately.

English language reviews

Theron Martin wrote on Anime News Network that anyone who cannot or does not want to tolerate the oversized violence like this in works like Elfen Lied , Ninja Scroll or Hellsing Ultimate should steer clear of Corpse Party: Tortured Souls . However, if you like such scenarios, this anime is an absolute must. Martin also praised the implementation of the animation, although he didn't like the story very much. Chris Beveridge wrote that he admired Asread's work and had few problems with the series, but the average anime fan could be disturbed by the scenes depicted in Corpse Party: Tortured Souls . He wrote that he could imagine some fans having the anime up their sleeves to introduce outsiders to a production outside of the ordinary and the hentai industry .

Opinions were divided about the English dubbed version.
