Corpse Party ( Jap. コープスパーティー) is a horror video game series of the developer team GrisGris in 1996 as Dojin was -Game. The idea for the game series comes from Makoto Kedōin .

The first game in the series was created using the RPG Maker software and was released for the PC-9801 . In 2008 and 2010, Corpse Party: Blood Covered and Corpse Party Blood Covered:… Repeated Fear were released two remakes for Windows or the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and iOS . In North America and Europe , the game series appears through Marvelous USA and Marvelous Europe .

Marvelous USA planned to release a localized version of Corpse Party Blood Covered for the PC in North America in 2015 , but it was postponed to 2016. In Japan, a version of appeared in 2015 Party Blood Covered ... Repeated Fear for the Nintendo 3DS , which has an additional chapter that is not on the previously published versions of the game on the PSP and iOS.

With Corpse Party: Book of Shadows a sequel was released in September 2011 in the Japanese market Corpse Party: Blood Covered for the PSP; a publication in North America followed in 2013. With Corpse Party: Hysteric Birthday 2 U followed in 2012 a spin-off for the PSP in Japan, which will appear in the western market for Windows in winter 2018. Corpse Party: Blood Drive , the third installment in the Corpse Party series, was released in Japan in 2014 for the PlayStation Vita , before it was released in North America and Europe in October of the following year. In 2018, Corpse Party: Blood Drive was listed by the ESRB for the Nintendo Switch , suggesting a possible port for the console.

GrindHouse, a developer company that has employees of Team GrisGris under contract, released Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient, another sequel for the PC. This game was released in episodes, with the first episode released in May 2013.

The corpse party series has been adapted many times. Several mangas , OVAs , two real films and drama CDs were released. Theme parks also took up the Corpse Party .

Gameplay

The Corpse Party series is a series of horror - adventure video games with elements of role play . The games are held from a third-person , top-down perspective. In order to achieve the goal of the game of escaping the school cursed by ghosts, the player must explore the school grounds, interact with its surroundings, inspect documents and avoid contact with the ghosts. In addition, the player has to pick up objects and communicate with the other characters.

The games are mostly divided into several chapters that relate to the different characters. Multiple endings are possible in each chapter, which can be achieved depending on the player's choices in the game. The true ending is achieved through the overall progress in the game, while several bad endings are unlocked by completing tasks that are irrelevant to the story outside of the actual storyline. The characters have health bars , which show how many hits a character can take before they die, which also unlocks a bad ending depending on the situation. Depending on how the player progresses in the game, another ten chapters can be unlocked that relate to the supporting characters and extend the duration of the game. In contrast to classic role-playing games, there is no combat system in Corpse Party . Instead, the player has to make decisions to avoid potential dangers.

The remakes Blood Covered and Repeated Fear also contain additional characters, a more extensive game world and a more extensive plot, as well as a detailed background story.

Many players describe Corpse Party as a visual novel . According to Tim Lipschultz, this is not entirely correct. Various scenes, such as the unlockable extra chapters, are exclusively characterized by dialogue scenes , but the game allows free exploration of the game world.

action

The corpse party games revolve around Japanese high school students who tell ghost stories to one another after their school festival ends and are sucked into a dilapidated, ghost-haunted primary school in a parallel universe by a surprising earthquake . The main character of the game is the kind-hearted student Satoshi Mochida, who is raised by his school friends due to his fearful nature.

Other characters include Naomi Nakashima, Yoshiki Kishinuma, Ayumi Shinozaki and Yuka Mochida, Satoshi's younger sister. The antagonist of the game is the red ghost of a young girl who seeks revenge for his wrongful death.

Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient, on the other hand, takes place five years after the acts of the game Corpse Party: Blood Drive in an abandoned hospital, the Amare Patriarch Crucis , from which it is necessary to escape. This game follows the student Ayame Itō, who has lost her memories of her past . In search of a way out, the player encounters other characters who turn out to be supporters or enemies, as well as bloodthirsty zombies .

development

Developed the Corpse Party -Videospielreihe among others by Dojin development team Team GrisGris and Grindhouse . The games use RPG Maker 2000 as their engine .

The graphics are a combination of two-dimensional animated sprites , silent fullscreen Arts, fleshy, squishy sound effects and high quality voice acting. The latter were recorded binaurally to create an illusory 3D sound. For this purpose, artificial heads were used as a microphone when recording the sounds in Blood Covered , Blood Drive and Book of Shadows . Corpse Party: Blood Drive and the sequel Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient have 3D animations for the first time, the characters are shown as Chibis , with the classic CG artwork still being used. These were designed by Sakuya Samishiro.

The Corpse Party series is popular among horror fanatics for its spooky elements, fascinating puzzles, and the truly scary storyline and characters. Even if the games are kept in a cute anime style, this is contrasted with horrific depictions of violence and terrifying situations. Corpse Party has achieved cult status in Japanese gaming circles .

By 2016, the series, including its adaptations, had grossed just under a billion yen in Japan .

Prohibitions

In June 2015, the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China announced that the Corpse Party would be banned along with 37 other manga and anime series . Liu Qiang said the listing was based on investigators' evaluations, ministry meetings, and expert opinions. The reasons given were the depictions of scenes glorifying violence, pornography , terrorism , crimes against public morality and the influencing of young people to commit such acts.
