Craig Campbell (singer)

Craig Campbell (* 1878 in London / Ontario ; † 1965 in New York City ) was a Canadian tenor who was best known as an operetta singer and in Broadway musicals.

Live and act

Campbell made his debut in 1908 as a singer and toured up in the 1930s as a vaudeville singer of the Keith Orpheum and the theater of Marcus Loew by Canada and the United States. In 1912 he was engaged for the original cast of the operetta The Firefly by Rudolf Friml and sang the leading role of Jack Travers alongside Emma Trentini .

In the same year he recorded A Woman's Smile from this operetta for Columbia . In addition to solo pieces, he recorded duets with Grace Kerns for Columbia and the Carmena Waltz song with Grace Kerns, Mildred Potter and Frank Croxton as an ensemble piece . For Pathé he sang Laura Lemons My Ain Folk with the soprano Clara Butt .

As a concert singer, Campbell had Italian and French songs and arias as well as German songs by Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann in their repertoire. In 1914 he became a member of the American Society of Singers , which is where his lifelong friendship with the contralto Cora Tracey dated.

Numerous engagements followed in American concert halls and on operetta stages. In 1918 he sang the title role in the cantata Faust and Helena by Lili Boulanger with the New York Symphony Orchestra alongside Julia Claussen . In 1919 he appeared at the St. Louis Municipal Opera in Johann Strauss Die Fledermaus . He also had great success in operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan .

In the late 1930s, Campbell retired from the stage. From 1942 to 1954 he was a tenor soloist at St. John's Episcopal Church in New Jersey. He lived in New York until his death in 1965.
