Crocidura lasiura is a species of shrew from the genus of the white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura ). It occurs in the temperate zone of East Asia from the Amur in Russia to Korea and in the People's Republic of China to Shanghai .

features

With a head-torso length of 6.8 to 10.4 centimeters, Crocidura lasiura is one of the larger shrew species in Eurasia and is the largest species of the genus in terms of head-torso length. The tail, on the other hand, reaches a length of only 28 to 47 millimeters and is therefore proportionally the shortest of the genus with a maximum of 45% of the head-trunk length. The rear foot is 15 to 23 millimeters long. The back fur is black-brown to dark brown and turns gray-brown on the sides of the body; it consists of long and thick hair. The belly side is iron gray, the tail is thick and dark brown in color.

Tooth formula of the Crocidura species

The skull has a pronounced forehead crest and a base length of 21.5 to 25 millimeters. Like all species of the genus, the species has one incisor per half in the upper jaw and then three single-pointed teeth, a premolar and three molars . In the lower jaw, however, it has a single canine behind the incisor. In total, the animals have a set of 28 teeth. As with all white-toothed shrews, the tooth roots are not pigmented in contrast to those of the red- toothed shrews.

The genome of Crocidura lasiura consists of a diploid chromosome set with 2n = 40 (FN = 56).

distribution

Distribution area (brown olive) of Crocidura lasiura according to the IUCN

Crocidura lasiura occurs in the temperate zone of East Asia from the Amur in Russia to Korea and in the People's Republic of China to Shanghai . In China, the distribution area includes parts of the provinces Heilongjiang , Nei Mongol and Jilin in the north as well as Sichuan , Jiangsu and Shanghai.

Way of life

Crocidura lasiura occurs in numerous habitats and lives mainly in deciduous forests, forest lake areas and swamps as well as drier pastures and thickets along rivers and lakes. However, it can also occur in agricultural areas and other human-influenced habitats . Like all shrews, this species feeds on invertebrates, especially insects and worms, but also on smaller vertebrates.

The breeding season extends from May to October. The females have up to three litters per year with six to eight young animals each, sometimes up to ten, whereby the early young animals are sexually mature in the first year and can have offspring. The lifespan is around 15 to 16 months.

Systematics

Crocidura lasiura is classified as an independent species within the genus of white-toothed shrews ( Crocidura ), which consists of around 170 species. The first scientific description comes from George Edward Dobson from 1890, who described an individual from the Ussuri from Manchuria in the north of the People's Republic of China.

Today, apart from the nominate form Crocidura lasiura lasiura, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species . Hoffmann and Lunde, however, classify the individuals from the southern Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Jiangsu and Shanghai as Crocidura lasiura campuslincolnensis Sowerby, 1945.

Threat and protection

Crocidura lasiura is classified as not endangered (least concern) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its large distribution area and the non-existent threat to its existence.
