The gold montbretia ( Crocosmia aurea ) is a species of the genus Montbretia ( Crocosmia ) in the family of the iridaceae .

The gold montbretia is a perennial tuber that reaches heights of 50 to 100 (130) centimeters and forms underground runners. The stem has 7 to 10 ribs. The leaves are ribbed and 1 to 2.2, rarely up to 3 centimeters wide. The inflorescence is not zigzag-shaped and consists of a few branches, each bearing 4 to 10 flowers. The flowers are almost radial and arranged in two lines on the inflorescence axis. The perigone is 3.5 to 6.5 inches long. The perigone tube is (15) 20 to 27 millimeters long, slender and hardly enlarged. The perigone are initially spread out in a star shape, later bent back. The perigone lobes of Crocosmia aurea var. Maculata Baker have a red-brown spot at the base.

Flowering time is from April to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The gold montbretia occurs in East and Southeast Africa in Tanzania , Congo , East Angola , East Zimbabwe , Mozambique , Swaziland , Lesotho and eastern South Africa on stream banks, in forest canyons and on the edges of forests.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Crocosmia aurea subsp. aurea : It occurs from Tanzania to South Africa.
  • Crocosmia aurea subsp. pauciflora (Milne-Redh.) Goldblatt (Syn .: Crocosmia pauciflora Milne-Redh. ) It occurs from the Central African Republic to northwestern Zambia.

use

The gold montbretia is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders and summer borders or as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1845 at the latest.
