Cruzeiro Seixas

Artur Manuel Rodrigues do Cruzeiro Seixas (born December 3, 1920 in Amadora ) is a Portuguese painter, draftsman, sculptor and poet. He is one of the most important representatives of Surrealism in Portugal .

Life

At the age of 14 he attended the art school Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio in Lisbon, where he worked alongside a. a. Júlio Pomar also met Mário Cesariny , with whom he had a long-standing, deep friendship. After a neorealistic-expressionist phase he joined the artist group Grupo Surrealista de Lisboa in 1942 and from 1947 to 1950 the group Os Surrealistas , as they called themselves at exhibitions , which had split off from it. In 1949 he took part in their first exhibition Exposição dos Surrealistas in Lisbon, alongside names such as Mário Cesariny, Alexandre O'Neill , Marcelino Vespeira , António Mário Lisboa , Mário-Henrique Leiria and others. a. In 1950, Seixas left Lisbon and from then on earned his living in the merchant navy . He mainly traveled to the Far East, particularly Hong Kong and Macau , Timor , India and the Portuguese possessions of Goa , Daman and Diu there . In 1952, Seixas settled in Angola . He exhibited there several times and worked a. a. for the Museum of Luanda .

In 1964, Seixas returned to Lisbon, under the impression of the increasing Portuguese colonial war in Angola. In 1967 he was awarded by the eminent Gulbenkian Foundation and he exhibited in Lisbon in 1967 and 1970. He attracted attention with works that remained true to the surrealist dream.

In 1972 he joined the international art movement Phases . In 1980 he settled in the Algarve , where he worked for various galleries. In 1984 his works were shown in the exhibition Phases, Permanance du Regard Surréaliste in Lyon , together with works by Lam , Alechinsky , Arp , Baj , Bellmer , Dalí , Miró and others. a.

Cruzeiro Seixas now lives in Lisbon and is considered one of the most important surrealist artists in the history of Portugal. His works are u. a. in the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian , Museu do Chiado , the National Library Biblioteca Nacional and the Museu Machado de Castro . In 1999, Seixas donated a large part of his art collection to the Fundação Cupertino de Miranda , after he had bequeathed most of his written work, documentation and notes to the National Library's Instituto da Biblioteca Nacional e do Livro in 1993 .
