Cruzeiro do Sul , officially Portuguese Município de Cruzeiro do Sul , German Southern Cross , is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul . The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 12,348 inhabitants, who live in a municipality of around 154.7 km² and are called Cruzeirenser ( cruzeirenses ). It is 140th of the 497 municipalities in the state and is around 126 km from the capital, Porto Alegre .

Surrounding communities are Santa Clara do Sul , Estrela , Lajeado , Mato Leitão , Venâncio Aires and Bom Retiro do Sul . The Rio Taquari forms the eastern boundary of the municipality.
