Population development

Residents 910 1,206 1,027 635 729

The continuous decline in population in the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms, the resulting loss of jobs and the migration of many villagers to the cities.

economy

In earlier centuries the population lived largely as a self-sufficiency from field and pasture farming; Vegetables and small livestock were raised in the hotel's own gardens. The construction of a stone bridge helped the place to an economic boom in the 17th century. Today the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays a not unimportant role for the economic life of the place.

history

Small finds suggest the presence of Stone Age people. A deed from 1185 documents the cession of the place to the Abbey of Chancelade ; in the 15th century it belonged to the castellany of Auberoche. In 1541 Cubjac was acquired by the then President of the Parliament of Bordeaux, who had a stone bridge built; However, it was destroyed in a flood in 1643 and then re-planned. The new building lasted until 1783 when another flood of the Auvézère destroyed half of it.

Attractions

  • The three-aisled Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The building was erected in the 19th century on the site of a medieval church, of which the portal still remains.
  • The bridge over the Auvézère was rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century - but taking into account plans by the architect Nicolas Rambourg from 1643.
  • Several manors ( Castel de Puy-ol-Faure , Château de la Borie , Chartreuse du Maine ; Château du Rozier , Château de la Sudrie and Manoir de la Faurie ) were rebuilt or rebuilt in the 19th century. The medieval parts are mostly in ruins.
