DEFA home film

Under the label DEFA -Heimfilm were in the GDR narrow films for the retail format Standard 8 and Super 8 produced by VEB DEFA lab Berlin.

In 1954, the DEFA-Kopierwerk in Berlin-Johannisthal founded the “Mass Demand” department on behalf of the minister. The following year the first titles appeared in Normal 8 format. Initially packed in red, blue or gray cardboard boxes, the films were soon sold in tin cans. With the advent of the Super 8 format, some titles were offered in both formats. To distinguish them, the labels for Super 8 were green and for Normal 8 blue. The color films that were added later, however, had red labels.

The film lengths were 33/30 or 66/60 meters (Super 8 or Normal 8), with the later color films also 50/45 meters. Some feature films were also released with a length of 132/120 meters, travel films with 17/15 meters. For "technological reasons", all DEFA home films were silent films without a soundtrack. The spectrum of films on offer included drawing and puppet animation, heavily abridged DEFA feature films, documentaries, but also works from the GDR's state film archive. More than 450 titles had appeared by the end of the GDR.
