Angelica Domröse (born April 4, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German stage and film actress who is one of the most famous actresses , mainly through her role as the single young mother "Paula" in Heiner Carow's cult film Die Legende von Paul und Paula (1973) the GDR was.

Life

Angelica Domröse grew up fatherless in Berlin. After training as a typist , she first worked in a state-owned foreign trade company in the GDR. In 1958 she was discovered by director Slatan Dudow during a casting for the film Confusion of Love . She attended the University of Film and Television Potsdam until 1961 and then belonged to the Berliner Ensemble until 1966 , where she appeared in Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera , Schweyk during World War II and Die Tage der Commune as well as Helmut Baierl's wife Flinz . From 1966 to 1975 she was married to Jiří Vršťala . After her engagement at the BE she was at the Volksbühne Berlin until 1979 . Here she played in plays by George Bernard Shaw , Henrik Ibsen , William Shakespeare and Peter Hacks . In addition, she worked for DEFA and German television broadcasting .

After signing the protest resolution against Wolf Biermann's expatriation from the GDR in November 1976, her work was increasingly hindered. In 1979 she appeared as Helena in a production of Faust II at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. In 1980 she finally moved with her husband Hilmar Thate to the Federal Republic , where she was also able to assert herself with demanding roles. In addition to guest appearances in Stuttgart , Hamburg , Bochum and Vienna , she mainly worked at the Schillertheater in Berlin . In 2006 Angelica Domröse had to be treated in a clinic after a breakdown; her husband had found her unconscious in the bathroom. In September 2009 she was admitted to a sanatorium after suffering from mental illness .

Angelica Domröse was married to actor Jiří Vršťala between 1966 and 1975 and to actor Hilmar Thate from 1976 until his death in 2016 .

Domröse lives in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
