action

Franz Bach, group designer at VEB Electronics, is honored for his latest development. He romps around the apartment with his children, the 10-year-old Täve, his 14-year-old daughter Sabine and the 19-year-old Klaus, but the arrival of his wife Margarete dampens the joy. She interrupts the game, discovers a stain on Franz's pants and is most interested in the bonus that Franz is entitled to for his development. She always has her back free for Franz, takes care of the household and the problems that go with it, but does not indulge herself and appears peeved. Franz, on the other hand, sees her as spoilsport and goes to work in a disgruntled mood. Here his colleagues congratulate him and his friend Heinrich Wolle is the last one to push the young Irene Sauer into the room, who gives Franz a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the interns. Franz is taken with the young, beautiful woman, takes her as a partial designer in his work group and spontaneously becomes her godfather. He insists that she be available to work with him around the clock.

When he comes home and immediately has another argument with the always worried Margarete, who doesn't seem to be interested in his work, Franz leaves again. Late at night he rings Irene's doorbell and they both work in a dance bar before they drink wine and dance together. Franz spends the next few days not only with Irene, but also at home on the sofa in the living room. Täve, Sabine and Klaus suspect that their father has a new girlfriend, because Sabine in particular caught him flirting with other women on vacation. Täve and his friend Atze organize a detective surveillance of Franz. Soon they see him with Irene. You are now planning to separate the two and at the same time save Franz and Margarete's marriage.

Margarete is "modernized" under Sabine's direction. Her upright updo gives way to a modern short haircut. In addition, Margarete is again attending French courses at the adult education center, because she wanted to become an interpreter earlier . When Franz wants to go on a weekend trip with Irene, Täve lays traps full of nails and destroys Franz's car tires. The waiting Irene is picked up by Klaus, who pretends to be Franz's deputy Günther. After initial difficulties, Irene and Klaus actually become a couple. At the same time, Irene distances herself from Franz, who reacts irritably and over time realizes that his own son has stolen his girlfriend from him. A big family row ensues, especially since Franz is also jealous of Margarete, who promptly takes a course at the adult education center with his colleague Wool. Klaus and Franz speak out loudly and Klaus makes it clear to his father that nobody wants a ridiculous head of the family. He also asks him to take more care of his wife. Franz and Margarete are reconciled, especially since Margarete realizes that Franz wanted to forget his first gray hair with the affair. Irene initially reacts angrily when Günther turns out to be Franz's son Klaus, but here, too, a reconciliation takes place and at the end of the 20th wedding anniversary of Franz and Margarete they even get engaged.

production

Papa's new girlfriend is based on an idea by Gertrud Nüsken. The housewife had won a comedy competition advertised by DEFA ; Hermann Rodigast converted the draft into a script. The film was shot within 35 days in 1960 and had its television premiere on December 25, 1960 on DFF 1 . The film was a hit with the public and was also shown in GDR cinemas on September 15, 1961. Two sequels followed: 1961 Much Beloved Starlet and 1962 Oh, this youth . Both television productions were later shown in the cinema.

The film's assistant director was the later successful television director Helmut Krätzig , who also took on a small role as a young man. Birgit Neubert, who plays the young Sabine Bach, already had the leading role in the DEFA children's film in 1959, Naturally the Nelli! accepted. The buildings are by Joachim Otto , the costumes were created by Luise Schmidt . Monika Grimm sings the hit Auf der Venus in the film .

criticism

Renate Holland-Moritz described Papa's new girlfriend as "a lot of fun, not without contemplative depth [...] Here neither a dachshund nor anyone else raises their morally sour voice. Four bright children who are enchanting in their play prove to be first-class educators. "

For the film service , it was “an enjoyable and dramatic marriage rescue operation, triggered by the amorous adventures of father and son. Acceptable comedy for GDR television. "
