action
It is the last day before the winter holidays that class 12b will go to the winter camp with their German teacher Karin Platzke, director Laube and FDJ secretary Eberhard Runge. The young Karin Platzke cannot assert herself against the students and does not seem to be up to the subject matter. She is in her late twenties and knows that some students have read more than she herself, who grew up as a half-orphan with a mother who always worked. When she announced a performance test for Goethe's Faust I , the class went on strike. Only the dutiful Margot and the underperforming outsider Dieter write the work. The rest of the class refuse and Karin reports the incident to Director Laube. He obliges the students of 12b to detention, while Dieter and Margot are allowed to go home early. The pupils blame Karin Platzke for her strike, and director Laube also criticizes the young teacher internally. No other teacher in the collective would have written a paper on the last day of school; she lacks pedagogical skills and empathy.
Karin Platzke does not want to go to the summer camp because she believes that the 12b students do not like her. Only a visit by Dieter changes her mind, because he believes like her that his classmates do not like him, but he really wants to go with them. He only managed to collect the necessary 40 marks: he saved 20 marks himself and borrowed the rest from classmate Lothar. He hoped to raise the money by selling his stamp collection. Mechanic Ede, to whom he has sold part of the collection, owes him the payment and finally gives him two books as a substitute, which could be sold on at high prices as “Western literature”.
Director Laube appears at Dieter's parents and informs them that Dieter is at risk of transfer. He has big problems especially in German and math. Dieter's father reacts uncontrollably and tears up Dieter's books on the biology of rodents - Dieter dreams of becoming a veterinarian one day. Suddenly Dieter's secret beloved Annegret appears at the Krauses and announces to Dieter that the class has taken over the sponsorship for him. Various students will help him in the future to learn the school material. The only condition is that Dieter let the "haggling" and trading be. Although Dieter does not receive pocket money from his strict father, he agrees to the condition. His mother gave him ten marks, but he still lacks another ten to settle his debts with Lothar, who wants his money back on the same day. Lothar finally blackmailed Dieter and asked him to get the two western books. Without Dieter's consent, he accepts the two books for the missing ten marks. Dieter has now violated the set condition of the class without wanting to.
In the holiday camp, the young people enjoy the snow and Karin Platzke teaches Dieter to ski. A little later the girls clean the rooms and find the two books on the West in Lothar's bed. FDJ secretary Eberhard Runge is appalled and Lothar defends himself that he received the books from Dieter. Dieter sadly admits that the books originally belonged to him and is sent to his room as a punishment. Since he had caught Annegret and Reinhard kissing shortly before, he ran away dejectedly. Outside there is a snowstorm and home manager Wuckelt discovers a youngster by chance in a dangerous rocky area. He rushes back to the vacation home and it turns out that the youngster must be Dieter, who fled through a back door. Karin Platzke and two students go looking for Dieter and Wuckelt is also looking for him at the same time. The rest of the classmates meanwhile take on Lothar, who now admits that he received the books using extortionate methods and Dieter by no means gave them away voluntarily.
Karin Platzke finds the buried Dieter who fell from a rock. The lifeless young man is brought back to the vacation home and reanimated. The classmates are relieved that Dieter is alive and show Karin Platzke respect for her commitment. Lothar is threatened with expulsion from school, but Dieter stands up for him so that he can stay at the school. The next day the weather improved. Karin Platzke and the students in class 12b ski together and director Laube and FDJ secretary Runge realize that the relationship between teacher and students has now improved significantly.
