DJK Sportfreunde Katernberg (officially: DJK Sportfreunde Katernberg 13/19 eV ) is a sports club from the Essen district of Katernberg . Under the name DJK Katernberg , the footballers were twice German champions of the Catholic German youth force .

history

Under the direction of chaplain Heinrich Küppers, a sports department was founded in the Marian Youth Congregation Katernberg in September 1919 , which was later renamed DJK Katernberg. Two years later, the Katernberg team won the German championship played out as part of the 1st DJK Reichstreffen in Düsseldorf with a 3-2 win after extra time against DJK Ludwigshafen . Three years later, the team was able to successfully defend its title. At the 2nd DJK Reich meeting in Frankfurt am Main , Essen won 4-2 in the final against DJK Sparta Bürgel . A year later came the end for the DJK footballers. The reason was irreconcilable differences between the active players and Kaplan Küppers.

In 1935 the association was forcibly dissolved. At the end of 1945 the association was re-established. In the 1970s, he was promoted to the district league several times. The greatest success was the runner-up in 1982 behind TuS Helene Essen , where only the poorer goal difference prevented promotion to the state league . In 1993 the association was renamed DJK Essen-Katernberg . After several promotions and relegations between the district league and district league A, the Katernbergers had to relegate to the district league A again in the 2016/17 season. With Ivan Žugčić , the DJK Katernberg produced a later Bundesliga player.

On March 24, 2017 , the DJK Katernberg merged with the long-time local rival Sportfreunde Katernberg . The sports friends were dissolved. The members joined the DJK, which changed its club name to DJK Sportfreunde. The footballers of Sportfreunde Katernberg played from 1947 to 1949 and from 1950 to 1953 in the first-class Oberliga West at the time and produced a world champion in Helmut Rahn . In terms of sport, the team had slipped into the district league B. The newly founded club starts in the 2017/18 season in the district league A.

In addition to football, the DJK Sportfreunde Katernberg also offers badminton , popular sports and table tennis . The chess department of Sportfreunde Katernberg did not merge and founded an independent association with Schachfreunde Essen-Katernberg .
