career

Ivan Žugčić played in the youth department of the Essen club DJK Katernberg. After playing for a year in the senior division for Katernberg, he switched to the amateur team at the second division club SG Wattenscheid 09 . With the SG-Amateurs he finished in 1978/79 in the Association League Westphalia, Group 2, second place and was taken over by coach Hubert Schieth in the 1979/80 season, like teammate Jürgen Hünerlage , in the second division squad . The team from Lohrheidestadion surprisingly reached 5th place and Žugčić had played 19 league games alongside teammates such as Ewald Hammes , Michael Jakobs , Peter Kunkel , Helmut Reiners , Wolfgang Patzke , Hans-Jürgen Zimmer , Helmut Zyla and Gerhard Drews . The defender made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga on August 22, 1979 in a 0-0 away draw at OSC Bremerhaven in the team of President Klaus Steilmann . On the mediation of Hubert Schieth, Bochum signed the two Wattenscheid players Michael Jakobs and Ivan Žugčić for the 1980/81 season, and VfL also signed Christian Gross and Dieter Lemke .

Under coach Helmuth Johannsen , the outstanding defender made his debut on August 16, 1980 in a 2-2 away draw against 1860 Munich in the Bundesliga. He came on for Lemke in the 85th minute. His first Bundesliga game from kick-off saw Žugčić on August 23 in a 1-1 home draw against MSV Duisburg. In front of goalkeeper Reinhard Mager , he acted as right defender at the side of Dieter Bast , Lothar Woelk and Michael Lameck . At the end of the round, VfL finished 9th and Wattenscheid 09's newcomer had played 16 league games (1 goal). He was also used in the DFB Cup in the three games against SV Wilhelmshaven (4: 1), Rot-Weiss Essen (5: 1) and FSV Frankfurt (2: 1). On the initiative of coach Johannsen, the Bochum Bundesliga team started on Easter Saturday 1981 on a tour of Mexico, the USA and Costa Rica. The first test match against the Mexican national team took place in Tampico on April 21st. The VfL contested the other test encounters in San Jose (Costa Rica) against Sabissa (1: 2), in Tulsa against the local Roughnecks (1: 1) and last but not least in Detroit against California Surf (0: 1). But not only games and training were on the program. Cultural, economic, spiritual and social were milestones on this journey.

From his second professional year, 1981/82, Žugčić experienced the work and personality of the trainer Rolf Schafstall . He played with the Bochum team for six years in the Bundesliga , but that also included more than a year of military service in his Yugoslav homeland. Under Schafstall successor Hermann Gerland , he completed his last Bundesliga game on June 17, 1987. In the 2-2 home draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf, he acted in front of goalkeeper Ralf Zumdick as a right defender and formed VfL's defense together with libero Thomas Kempe , Rob Reekers and Lameck.
