The Dammelsberg is a 318 m high mountain in the Marburg Ridge . It lies between Marbach in the north, the Marburger Oberstadt in the east and Ockershausen in the south; Wehrshausen is not far to the west . Marburg Castle is only 1 km away on the east-northeast spur of the mountain, which is equipped with a refuge . It is considered a possible earlier location of the defunct cash castle .

The mountain consists of red sandstone and is mostly covered with deciduous forest , especially oak and a small proportion of coniferous wood. Its peak range is in total 21.8  ha large FFH area Dammelsberg and Kohler reason . The Lahnwanderweg leads over this . In the long term, this area is to be transformed into a mixed oak forest. There is a population of bats there . The Dammelsberg was once important for forestry , and oaks were planted there over 200 years ago to transform this area into a local recreation area. Since there was often a lack of money for remodeling, the forest has largely been left to its own devices to this day. Today it is largely left at that for nature conservation reasons. It is no longer a recreational area in the true sense of the word, as there is an acute danger to life due to the danger of the old oaks falling over. Of 16 bat species known in Germany, there are 13 here. There are also five species of woodpecker and the largest population of stag beetles in Germany.

A significant point there is the so-called murder oak , which is still standing. The shoemaker's journeyman Ludwig Hilberg murdered his lover Dorothea Wiegand there on September 9, 1861. He was convicted of murder and executed in Marburg on October 14, 1864. At the scene of the crime, however, the date “9/12/1861” is on a sign attached to the oak. It is probably the date on which the body Dorothea Wiegand was found by the forester Lorenz Reinhardt. It was the last public execution in Hesse and the last but one in Germany.
