Dan Kaufman

Dan Kaufman is a special effects artist , who in 2010 for the film District 9 in the category visual effects best for the Oscar nomination.

Life

He grew up in Newport Beach , California and studied computer science and electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley . During his studies, he worked as a developer of graphical user interfaces for software for Commodore 64 computers. He then worked for the computer game developer and publisher Spectrum HoloByte as a programmer and project manager. This was followed by a job at the software company Pacific Interactive .

He got his first job in the field of film animation through the wife of Richard Hollander , the founder of the visual effects company VFIX . He stayed with VFIX until 1996, working on films such as Outbreak , Power Rangers - The Movie , Operation: Broken Arrow and the television series The Shining . He went to Australia for a few months to work on the thriller Dark City . After returning to Los Angeles, he worked for various visual effects companies such as Cinesite , Digital Domain , and Sony Pictures Imageworks . In 2002 he finally went to CIS Hollywood , where he was director of digital effects on films such as Matrix Revolutions , The Core and X-Men: The Last Stand . In 2009, he joined Image Engine as the visual effects director to work on the science fiction film District 9 . Together with Peter Muyzers , Robert Habros and Matt Aitken , he was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects for this film .
