history

In 1832, the trapper Benjamin Bonneville erected the first building in the Rocky Mountains west of the main ridge, Fort Bonneville, near today's location , but gave it up that same year because of the poorly chosen location. From 1833 onwards, almost all of the annual fur traders' meetings called rendezvous took place here. The meeting place has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1961 under the name Upper Green River Rendezvous Site .

The current location evolved from Homesteads in the 1890s. It is named after Thomas Pixley Daniel, who settled in 1899 and opened the region's first post office in addition to a shop for the settlers. The village was formally registered in the same year. From 1905 a school was established, and in 1909 the local hotel got a telephone connection. In 1917 the fish farm , which still exists today, was established. The school closed in 1939, since then the children of the village attend school in County Seat Pinedale, 20 km east . The school house now houses the Daniel Community Center .
