Daniel Bethlehem

Sir Daniel Bethlehem Lincoln KCMG , QC (*  16th June 1960 in London ) is a British lawyer , who as a lawyer in the field of international law operates. He has represented his home country and a number of other countries in various international courts and served as senior legal advisor in the UK Foreign Office from 2006 to 2011 .

Life

Daniel Bethlehem was born in London in 1960 and grew up in South Africa , where he graduated with a BA in Political Science and International Relations from Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg in 1981 . After returning to his home country, he also studied law and became in 1985 an LL.B. degree at Bristol University , and in 1990 a LL.M. degree at Queens' College of the University of Cambridge .

After he first several years for an investment bank was active, he received in 1988 admitted to the Barrister . From 1990 to 2006 he worked as a lawyer specializing in international law at Forrester Norall & Sutton in Brussels until 1992 and then in private practice in his hometown . During this time he represented his home country several times before the International Court of Justice , the European Court of Justice and the International Tribunal for the Sea . In addition, he joined among others Malaysia , Belgium and Israel before the International Court of Justice as well as for Turkey before the European Court of Human Rights and for the United States before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal on.

Daniel Bethlehem also taught international law at the London School of Economics and Political Science from 1992 to 1998 . He then worked from 1998 to 2003 as deputy director and from 2003 to 2006 as director of the Lauterpacht Research Center for International Law at the University of Cambridge, where he was a Fellow of College Clare Hall during this time .

From 2006 to 2011 he was Principal Legal Adviser with the rank of Director General in the UK Foreign Office . Since leaving the ministry, he has returned to private practice. He is also the founding director of the legal policy international consultancy . The Times newspaper named him one of the 100 most influential British lawyers in 2008 and 2009 on its Times Law 100 list.

Awards

Daniel Bethlehem was named Queen's Counsel in 2003 and Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George seven years later . He is also a Bencher (senior appointed member) of the Middle Temple Bar Association .
