Bishop Daniel Gil Zorrilla SJ

Daniel Gil Zorrilla SJ (born July 10, 1930 in Montevideo , Uruguay ; †  September 7, 2008 ibid) was Bishop of the Diocese of Salto in Uruguay.

Life

Daniel Gil Zorrilla studied law in Montevideo from 1948 and joined the religious order of the Society of Jesus in 1955 . After his first vow he studied humanities in Chile , from 1959 to 1961 he studied philosophy at the Theological College in San Miguel , Buenos Aires. From 1962 to 1965 he finished his studies with theological training in San Miguel and was ordained priest on December 19, 1964 in Montevideo. In 1966 he finished his law studies in the USA.

Gil initially worked in Montevideo in the formation of priests. In 1968 he received his PhD in Spiritual Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University . Afterwards he was engaged in the spiritual accompaniment and in spiritual exercises in parishes and religious houses all over Uruguay.

In 1983 he was appointed bishop of the Tacuarembó diocese by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination in Montevideo was donated to him on April 10, 1983 by Archbishop Franco Brambilla , then Apostolic Nuncio in Uruguay; Co- consecrators were Carlos Parteli Keller , Archbishop of Montevideo, and his predecessor, Bishop Miguel Balaguer .

In 1989, Gil was appointed fourth bishop of Salto by John Paul II . His age-related resignation was approved in 2006 by Benedict XVI. granted.

Daniel Gil died in 2008 at the age of 78 from complications from a heart attack.
