Daniel Hermann (humanist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Hermann (* around 1543 in Neidenburg ; † December 29, 1601 in Riga ) was a German humanist and poet.

Life

Born as the son of the mayor Andreas Hermann, he attended school in his hometown, moved to the University of Königsberg , moved to the University of Strasbourg , returned to Königsberg (Prussia) and then went back to Strasbourg . From there he moved to the University of Basel , where, after a short stay at the University of Ingolstadt , he completed his humanistic studies at the University of Wittenberg . After a geological study trip, he went to Vienna , where he worked as a secretary at the imperial court.

In 1578 he went to Danzig , where he represented the interests of the city, accompanied Stephan Báthory during the Livonian War, moved to Riga and married there. From here went to the service of the city of Riga. After a few years, however, he withdrew from his service there to become literary until he died. As a later humanist, Hermann was also active as a Latin poet. His widow Ursula (née Kröger) later published his works, which testify to his talent for representation and demonstrate light but not in-depth comprehension with a national sense. His family register with entries from 1567 to 1587 has been preserved in the Lund University Library.

In 1895 its epitaph was found again during renovation work in the Riga Cathedral .
