Daniel Philippides

Daniel Philippides , also Daniil Filippidis , secular first name Dimitrios ( Greek Δανιήλ Φιλιππίδης , secular first name Δημήτριος , * 1750 in Milies ; † 1832 in Bessarabia ) was a Greek monk and scholar. He is considered a protagonist of the Greek Enlightenment and was a member of the Filiki Eteria .

Life

Philippides' family came from Euboea and settled in Milies. Philippides became a monk and began studying at Mount Athos (Athonite School), which he continued in Chios and Bucharest . In 1790 his geographical work Γεωγραφία Νεωτερική ( Modern Geography ) appeared in Vienna . From 1790 to 1794 he lived in Paris , where he gave courses in mathematics and science . In 1794 he returned to Milies and then went to Constantinople . There he lost all his belongings and the unfinished manuscript for the second volume of geography in a fire. He left the city and moved to Constanta.

From 1810 to 1818 he traveled to several European cities: Paris, Strasbourg , Munich , Vienna and Leipzig , where he stayed for two years. During this time, wrote his Philippides Ίστορία τής Ρουμουνίας ( Romanian History ), the Γεωγραφικόν της Ρουμουνίας ( Geography of Romania ) and the Απόπειρα Αναλύσεως του Νοουμένου ( attempt to analyze the noumenon ). He also translated six scientific works into Greek, four of which were printed. Eventually he turned more and more to philosophy and was significantly influenced by Kant .

Iakovos Rhizos Nerulos is one of his students .
