Daniel Santos Peña (born October 10, 1975 in San Juan , Puerto Rico ) is a retired Puerto Rican boxer . He was WBO welterweight world champion (May 2000 - March 2002) and light middleweight (March 2002 - December 2005), and WBA light middleweight world champion (July 2008 - November 2009).
As an amateur, he won a bronze welterweight medal at the 1996 Olympic Games .
Career
Amateur career
Daniel Santos won bronze light welterweight medals at the 1990 World Junior Championships in Peru and 1992 in Canada . He was eliminated in the semi-finals in 1990 against Stevie Johnston and in 1992 against Roko Fröhlich.
At the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1993 in Puerto Rico, he lost in the quarterfinals to Héctor Vinent , and he lost in the preliminary round at the 1993 World Championships in Finland against Peter Claesson.
In 1994 he won bronze welterweight at the Goodwill Games in Russia after losing to Juan Hernández in the semifinals . In 1995 he was able to win the silver medal in the welterweight division at the Pan American Games in Argentina . He only just failed in the final 9: 9+ against David Reid .
At the 1995 World Championships in Germany , he was eliminated again in the preliminary round against Juan Hernández, but won the American Olympic qualification in Puerto Rico in 1996.
He then started at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , where he defeated Ernest Mboa, Kabil Lahsen and Nariman Atayev, before he was eliminated in the semifinals with just 11:13 against Oleg Saitow and won bronze in welterweight.
Professional career
Daniel Santos became a professional boxer after the 1996 Olympic Games and fought for the WBO welterweight championship in the Hansehalle Lübeck on November 27, 1999 , but lost to Achmed Kotijew by just a few points . In the rematch on May 6, 2000 at the Swissôtel Neuss , Santos won by knockout (knockout) in the fifth round and thus became WBO world champion. He then defended the title by knocking out Giovanni Parisi and Neil Sinclair, as well as by a no contest (injury-related termination of the fight in the first round after an accidental headbutt) against Antonio Margarito .
Santos then rose to the light middleweight division and won the WBO world title on March 16, 2002 in Las Vegas , after his opponent Luis Campas gave up the fight in the eleventh round (technical knockout - TKO). He defended the title against Mehrdud Takaloo, Fulgencio Zúñiga, Michael Lerma and Antonio Margarito before he lost it on December 3, 2005 in Magdeburg by a point defeat to Serhij Dsindsiruk .
In October 2007 he beat Jose Rivera and thereby received a fight for the WBA World Light Middleweight Championship, which he won on July 11, 2008 in Montreal by knockout in the sixth round against the previously undefeated Joachim Alcine . He lost the title in the first defense on November 14, 2009 in Las Vegas by a point defeat to Yuri Foreman .
