Central American and Caribbean Games 1993

The 17th Central America and Caribbean Games took place from November 19-30, 1993 in the Puerto Rican city ​​of Ponce .

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the landing of Christopher Columbus in Puerto Rico, the usual four-year rhythm of the games was shortened to three years. The subsequent games were only held five years later.

The most successful nation was once again Cuba , whose athletes won 227 gold medals in a total of 385 competitions. Mexico took second place in the medal table with 66 gold medals, ahead of Venezuela with 23 gold medals.

Participating Nations

31 countries took part in the Central America and Caribbean Games with a total of 3570 athletes. St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Lucia made their debut.

The Central American and Caribbean Games featured 32 sports. Badminton was dropped again, while handball , karate and roller skating competitions were held for the first time. The canoe competitions were held in the Cuban capital Havana .
