Central American and Caribbean Games 1962

The 9th Central American and Caribbean Games took place from August 11th to 25th, 1962 in the Jamaican capital Kingston . Five days before its opening ceremony, the island nation of Jamaica had gained independence from the United Kingdom . President of the organizing committee was Herbert Macdonald , who had participated in the games as a tennis player in 1930.

Mexico was the most successful nation with 37 gold medals ahead of Venezuela , whose athletes won gold 15 times.

Participating Nations

15 countries with a total of 1559 athletes took part in the Central America and Caribbean Games. The Bahamas and Barbados made their debut.

sports

The Central America and Caribbean Games featured 16 sports. Riding and gymnastics , both still in the program in 1959, were no longer part of the games. For the first time competitions were held in sailing .
