Central American and Caribbean Games 2002
The 19th Central American and Caribbean Games took place from November 23rd to December 7th, 2002 in San Salvador , the capital of El Salvador .
Since Cuba did not participate for the first time since 1959 , Mexico , whose athletes won 146 gold medals in a total of 448 competitions, was another nation at the top of the medal table for the first time since 1966 .

31 countries took part in the Central American and Caribbean Games with a total of 4301 athletes.

The Central America and Caribbean Games featured 37 sports. New in the program were competitions in modern pentathlon and squash . Handball and racquetball were played in the Dominican Republic , sailing competitions in Mexico , canoeing in Guatemala and hockey in Puerto Rico .
