Political career (since 1999)

In 1999 Zimmermann and four other young people from Monheim am Rhein were among the founders of the PETO youth party, of which he was chairman until 2004. The party has been able to continuously increase its election results in the city since it was founded. In 1999 it achieved three seats with 6.1% and in 2004 with 16.6% already seven seats. In the same year Zimmermann moved into the city council after five years earlier it would have been impossible for him to stand for this because in Germany the right to stand as a candidate is only obtained at the age of majority . Mayor of Monheim (2009 to date)

Mayoral election 2009

On August 30, 2009, PETO achieved 29.56% of the vote and twelve seats in the Monheim city council election, drawing level with the CDU . In the mayoral election taking place at the same time, for which Zimmermann was nominated as a candidate by his party in August 2008, Zimmermann was able to secure the relative majority with 30.35% of the votes , which was sufficient to win the election after the runoff election was abolished in 2007 . Daniel Zimmermann was the first and only mayor of Monheim to be elected for a six-year term; from 2020, future mayors in North Rhine-Westphalia can only be elected for a five-year term.

Mayoral election 2014

After four years as mayor (his regular term of office would have lasted until August 2015), Zimmermann decided to shorten the term of office in favor of a joint election of the mayor and city council. The amalgamation of the two elections, which finally took place on May 25, 2014, brought the city of Monheim am Rhein estimated savings of around 50,000 euros. He won the re-election as mayor with 94.64% of the vote, the highest result in a mayoral election in Monheim am Rhein.

The second term of office for Daniel Zimmermann ends in September 2020.

Political agenda

According to Zimmermann's own statement, the most important political measure was the lowering of the trade tax in 2012. In relation to the high trade taxes in the neighboring communities, this led to an influx of businesspeople and increasing household income and, from 2014, the city was free of debt. In addition, he politically implemented the exemption of all daycare centers and free public transport for all Monheim residents.

Politically, Zimmermann cannot be assigned to any camp. During his first term as mayor, he implemented his plans with changing majorities with the support of the Greens, the SPD or the CDU. However, he distinguishes himself from "conservative, tradition-conscious" interests.
