The Dannenröder Forest (also Dannenröder Forest ) is an approx. 300 year old deciduous and mixed forest between Homberg (Ohm) and Stadtallendorf 20 km east of Marburg in Hesse . It is a permanent mixed forest with a high proportion of beech and oak . The forest has been considered a model forest for sustainable forest management since the 1980s . The forest has been occupied by activists since October 2019 to prevent the clearing of an approximately 100 hectare area for the planned federal motorway 49 .

history

Parts of the Dannenröder forest are also known as the “outer court forest”. For centuries the forest has been in the possession of the barons Schenck zu Schweinsberg , who belonged to the Hessian nobility and the Old Hessian, Franconian and Rhenish imperial knighthood .

Younger past and present

From the beginning of the planning of the A49, which will connect Kassel and Gießen and lead through both the Dannenröder Forest and the Herrenwald, there was resistance to the planning. The Schutzgemeinschaft Gleental eV and the Aktiongemeinschaft Schutz des Ohmtals campaigned for the preservation of the forest, and the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) Hessen filed two suits with the Federal Administrative Court (BVerwG). In 2019, the various initiatives came together to form the “No A49!” Alliance. On June 23, 2020, the BVerwG decided on the action brought by the BUND, which related to the violation of the European Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD) and dismissed the action.

Since October 1, 2019, the Dannenröder forest has been occupied by around 100 activists who work to save the forest and prevent its destruction. The camp received Hesse and nationwide attention.

The Hessian state government, consisting of CDU Hessen and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Hessen , advocates the further construction of the A 49 in its coalition agreement. The local CDU district associations have collected over 7,000 signatures for each A 49. The Vogelsberg district council and the two local district administrators Kirsten Fründt and Manfred Görig are also in favor of further construction.

Flora and fauna

Beech and oak predominantly grow in the Dannenröder forest. According to the plant lists still available, the oldest trees are around 300 years old and mostly in a healthy condition. The canopy of leaves is largely closed and the forest is naturally rejuvenated. The forest is a habitat for many animals. It is home to a colony of crested newts, which are threatened with extinction . To protect them, u. a. Forest conversion measures, such as the development of natural mixed oak forests, by planting over 12,000 sessile oaks in existing thinned forest areas. Since 2019 reptiles have been relocated south of Stadtallendorf to newly created biotopes, and ponds suitable for crested newts have been renovated.

There is a large body of groundwater under the forest, which also serves as a water reservoir for the Rhine-Main area .
