The eye of god

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eye of God was the name of a rock band from Schwerin that existed from 1989 to 1998. The work of the six band members was mainly characterized by the linguistically powerful texts and cross-style arrangements.

Surname

According to the band, a provocative name was chosen in the founding year 1989, “Das Auge Gottes”, which consciously plays with the great symbols of faith. However, the band had no ecclesiastical background, but practiced in the name in the hope that “no deeds will go unseen, but will fall back on their perpetrators”. In addition, the name is to be understood against the background of the musicians' origins from the GDR - which was disintegrating at the time - in which several members of previous bands were prohibited from playing. In the days of naming, it was still unclear which way the changes would take in the GDR and all critical bands used the words between the lines to send messages that the GDR state security apparatus might still recognize, but (hopefully) not could be punished.

history

Founded in 1989, Das Auge Gottes was made up of members from various bands. Including the formation Elegantes Chaos, in which Richard Kruspe - today guitarist at Rammstein  - played from time to time. 1989–1992 was mostly spent in the rehearsal room , and there were few appearances at local events.

The friend of a band member sent a demo tape to the jury of the John Lennon Prize . The second place in the final in Kiel could be won and thus a single production. This was recorded in the Yamaha Music School in Hamburg and released on the independent label Devil Dance Records . The producers of the CD were Udo Dahmen and Benjamin Hüllenkremer , who showed more interest in the band and thus promoted the production of an album.

The first album Das Auge Gottes was completed in 1993. The title you nailed Jesus Christ to the cross , published on it, developed into a small indie hit. A video produced on our own initiative together with director Björn Amend made it onto the MTV 120 Minutes playlist . At the end of 1993, A&R manager Sina Farschid became aware of the band and made an offer for a record deal , which the band accepted.

The second single, Gone is Over , was often played by local radio stations (e.g. MDR Sputnik ). The video for the single ran on night rotation at VIVA . The second single also showed the borderline between indie success and commercial approaches. The stylistic diversity of the material on the first album offered the opportunity to pursue both goals.

In the period that followed, up to 100 live performances were performed annually, including concerts at the Bizarre Festival and the Ringfest in Cologne. A new edition of the CD also included a multi-media track containing videos, photos and a computer game.

The second album, Kleines Leben , was dominated by the experiences of the touring and, compared to the first album, was much more rock and guitar-heavy, which could be presented more impressively at concerts than previous titles, which were often electronically supported. The album was produced in Brussels and Hamburg. Again, the producer duo Dahmen / Hüllenkremer played a key role. A video was produced for the single Das Ding that goes through the wind that was not played by the music channels. Live concerts were thus still the means to reach the fan base and were carried out in large numbers.

The third album Zärtlich auf die Wunden was recorded in Stuttgart in early 1996 together with producer Klaus Scharff ( Die Fantastischen Vier ). Stylistically, more emphasis was placed on the variety of musical preferences in the band. In addition to the usual rock songs, reggae and hip-hop influences can also be heard. In 1997 the album was presented on a support tour with Phillip Boa .

The band broke up at the end of 1997 and gave a final concert in the founding city of Schwerin in early 1998. For a production for the compilation That’s only available once as part of the documentation Pop 2000 , Das Auge Gottes was reanimated again and covered the song Sehnsucht by the Einstürzende Neubauten .
