Rejoice in Life (also known as The Whiskey Ship ) is a 1949 British film directed by Alexander Mackendrick . It is based on the novel Whiskey Galore by Compton Mackenzie , who also wrote the screenplay.

action

The film tells the story of the fictional Hebridean island of Todday, which ran out of whiskey during the Second World War . When a cargo ship loaded with whiskey runs aground off the island, the islanders secretly recover the cargo and hide it from the authorities, especially the curious and narrow-minded commander of the Home Guard , Captain Wagget.

The novel and the film are based on a true story: In 1941, the cargo steamer Politician stranded in Eriskay Sound near the small island of Calway . The inhabitants of the surrounding islands recovered 24,000 boxes of whiskey and hid them from the customs authorities, so that most of them could never be officially recovered.

The film was shot mostly on the island of Barra .

Award

The film was nominated for the British Film Academy Award for Best British Film in 1950 . The British Film Institute voted Rejoice in Life in 1999 as the 24th best British film of the 20th century .
