The miracle of Vienna: We are European champions is a mockumentary from 2008. It was shown on ORF 1 as part of the 2008 European Football Championship .

action

The plot of the film begins four weeks after the semi-finals of the European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland . The film reminds the viewer of the decisive games that are said to have made Austria European champions. It captures Austria's emotions after the game at the time. Interviews with well-known Austrian personalities will be shown shortly after the final. Among other things, television analyzes and fictional players, such as striker Peter Hruska, allegedly a player of FC Bayern Munich , were built in.

European Championship

The group promotion of Austria is already fixed after two close victories in the group stage against Poland and Croatia. Before the last game of the preliminary round, the situation is similar to that before the Gijón non-aggression pact , and the Austria-Germany game follows this example. This is followed by a quarter-final against Switzerland, which is also won after a tough game. In the semifinals, Austria meets arch-rivals Germany, where the team has to tremble until the end, but can finally bring the victory home through a controversial referee decision. This triggers outrage in the neighboring country. Günter Netzer, for example, describes it as the “second Cordoba and fears that Germany “will lag behind for a very long time” . In the final game, the Austrian national soccer team ultimately wins the 2008 European soccer championship against the national team of the Netherlands - carried by the euphoria of the fans .

The addition of a concert by the band Heinz from Vienna in May 2008 was filmed for Das Wunder von Wien as a fictional victory celebration.

production

The ORF commissioned the film, the director was the satirist David Schalko ( Dorfers Donnerstalk , Die 4 da ), and the script was written by Fred Schreiber ( Willkommen Österreich , broadcast without a name ). Some real scenes are built into the film, others, such as interviews, were shot afterwards. Participating actors included Josef Hickersberger , Friedrich Stickler , Josef Pröll as well as sports analysts and players from the Austrian national team. The soundtrack for the film was provided by the band Heinz from Vienna with the song Das Wunder von Wien. The film was broadcast on June 6th, one day before the opening game of the European Championship.
