The flying ship (original title: Russian Летающий корабль , Letaiuschtschi korabl ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Artur Woitezki and Michail Juferow from 1960 based on a Ukrainian hero legend .

action

The people who live in the vast plains of the Dnieper will one day be visited by a black dragon that plagues them . This time he steals the beautiful Alyonka, whereupon her little brother Kotigoroschko, a child with great physical strength, sets out to free his little sister. He first wanders through a scorching desert, which was once fertile land before the dragon came there, and then reaches a dark forest. There he frees the fast runner that has stuck to enchanted leaves that had actually been laid out by the dragon's sister, a fortune teller, to dissuade Kotigoroschko from his plan. At midnight, a magic horse appears to the child, from whose mane Kotigoroschko tears a silver-gray hair that he has to burn if he wants to call the horse back. After driving away some lions , he reaches the high mountains, where he finds the starved Wernigora forged on a rock. He hands him a piece of bread, whereupon the regained strength can break the chains that bind him. In gratitude, the redeemed paves the way for his liberator through the mountains and Kotigoroschko continues on his way.

Having penetrated into the realm of the black dragon, Kotigoroschko manages to escape several traps set by Och, the dragon's servant, to prevent him from progressing. Then he rescues the girl Lebeduschka, who was also kidnapped by the dragon, from the clutches of a giant spider . The rescued one tells him that Och gave her a magic potion that prevents her from falling asleep and that only loses its effect when the black dragon has perished. She also tells him that the dragon is not that easy to kill. Kotigoroschko returns to the people, where he lets the Zaporozhian Cossacks forge the right sword for the fight against the dragon. With the summoned magic horse he rides to other people, with whom he falls a magic area by means of his miracle sword . The people build him a flying ship out of their wood, with which he goes back to the realm of the black dragon.

Kotigoroschko first defeats the dragon's brother in a fight, but is then shot from behind by the treacherous Och with a poisoned arrow. Near death he calls the fast runner for help, who immediately brings him some water of life. Recovered from the poisoning, Kotigoroschko seeks out the black dragon, who had recently announced to his followers that he was marrying Alyonka. The festivities are suddenly crushed by Kotigoroschko and his friends who have been summoned, and in the following argument the child-like hero is able to defeat the dark dragon in a duel. Unnoticed by the dragon, Aljonka had taken her own life because she would rather be dead than lose her freedom. So Kotigoroschko pours some of the water of life over her, whereupon his little sister comes to life again. They fly home to the Dnieper by ship. The little folk hero breaks the miracle sword there in the hope that he will never have to use it again.
