We see photos of the city of Mühlhausen from the 1970s from a bird's eye view, with views of individual streets, of half-timbered houses with red roofs, the churches and the people who live there. This is the beginning of the film, filled with many more new recordings, but also with images of works of art from the time of Renaissance humanism to the 20th century.
It is about the German Peasants' War between 1524 and 1525 and the life of Thomas Müntzer , who is known as a theologian , reformer and revolutionary during this time . He is an admirer of Martin Luther and is not only against the spiritual superiors, but also against the corporatist dominated secular order. As pastor of the Marienkirche in Mühlhausen he becomes an agitator who also campaigns for the violent liberation of the peasants. The result is a military organization of the oppressed, because the cause of the common people cannot be enforced against the attacks of the exploiters with the word alone. Müntzer dreams of a human coexistence of equals among equals.
In April 1525 the peasant uprising began in Thuringia, with the first victories in the battle, which continued in May. Numerous monasteries, castles and palaces are destroyed. On May 14, 1525, the princely armies unite in front of Frankenhausen , forming a ring around the rebels. The next day Müntzer speaks to the farmers, at that moment the mercenaries attack them and defeat them completely. Thomas Müntzer was captured, tortured and publicly executed on May 27, 1525.
