David Hofstra

David Hofstra (* 1953 in Leavenworth , Kansas ) is an American jazz bassist and tuba player .

Live and act

Hofstra became known in the New York avant-garde scene in the 1980s . He performed there in the context of the M-Base musicians, worked with Greg Osby , Robin Eubanks , but also in the downtown scene around John Zorn and Bill Frisell , David Rosenbloom and with Bobby Previte , on his first album Bump the Renaissance he participated. In 1985 he took Wayne Horvitz's album This New Generation and worked on John Zorn's concept albums The Big Gundown and Spillane . In 1989 he accompanied Bill Frisell on his album Is That You? . In the 1990s Hofstra worked with the New York Composers Orchestra , as tuba player in William Parker's big band production Sunrise in the Tone World 1997, as well as with Lou Grassi (1996) and Chris Kelsey (1999). Since 1997 he has also been the constant musical companion of Rachelle Garniez and can be heard on almost all of her albums. In the 2000s, he plays bass in Elliott Sharps Formation Terraplane and William Gagliardi 5tet , further comprising the Microscopic Septet by Phillip Johnston , with Robin Holcomb and Dave Sewelson .
