Dave MacRae

David Scott "Dave" MacRae (* 2. April 1940 in Auckland ) is a from New Zealand originating pianist and keyboardist of fusion and modern jazz .

Life

Apart from a brief study at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, MacRae acquired his musical skills self-taught . In the 1960s he worked in Australia as an arranger for the record label Festival Records and played with Graeme Lyall, Don Burrows and John Sangster . In 1969 he moved to the US and played with experimental bands in Los Angeles before 1970 a member of the Big Band of Buddy Rich was. In 1971 he settled in London and initially worked at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club with musicians such as Clark Terry , Chet Baker , Jon Hendricks and Gil Evans .

In 1971 he played briefly with a band called Caparius and then became a member of the band Matching Mole around Robert Wyatt and the formations Just Us by Elton Dean and played a. a. with Michael Gibbs and Mike Westbrook , but also recorded an album with Annie Ross . With Gary Windo , Ron Mathewson and Wyatt he formed the group WMMW . In 1973 he was a member of the jazz rock formation Nucleus .

In 1974 he was involved in sessions with Colin Hodgkinson's rock jazz trio Back Door ; then he and his wife, the singer Joy Yates , devoted himself mainly to his band project Pacific Eardrum until 1979 . He also worked with musicians from the Canterbury scene such as Robert Wyatt and Richard Sinclair / Lol Coxhill , but also with Mike Gibbs ; he was also responsible for the music for the television comedian series The Goodies . In the 1980s MacRae played briefly with the band False Alarm , then in 1984 in the revived formation Soft Machine . He returned to Australia that year and played in the Sydney area with Bernie McGann and Ronnie Scott . In 1998 he performed again with his wife at the London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s and has since limited himself to appearances in Australia. In 2007 he performed with Brian Smith at the National Jazz Festival in Tauranga .

After Ian Carr, MacRaes' musical role models range from Art Tatum , Monk , Wynton Kelly , Bill Evans to Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul .
